I’ve learned a lot about William Carleton recently, but my two favorite facts are the following:
1) he begins his autobiography with the word “Alas.” How’s that for the power of affect?
2) he was as pleased to hear that he looked like Walter Scott as he was to hear that he wrote like Walter Scott. Misunderstanding mimesis?
I look forward to reading more about (and from) the man who managed to anger nearly everyone, while always already being let down by the Irish people.
